1967 North Carolina Outward Bound runs its first courses! Pop Hollandsworth is the Executive Director.
1968 - 1970 Murry E. Durst serves as director.
Durst draws on the roots of Outward Bound to develop North Carolina Outward Bound School’s programming. He recruits instructors who are as much sensitive educators as skilled outdoor users.
1971 - 1976 Dan Meyer serves as Executive Director.
The School achieves financial stability and a national reputation for excellence during Meyer’s tenure.
1971 Begin offering courses for girls.
The School also offers courses for groups like managers and teachers.
1973 Junior courses for students aged 14 to 16 are added.
The School also offers winter courses for college students with interim breaks and contract courses for other organizations.
1973 First official instructor’s handbook is published.
1973 Dan and Diane Meyer publish To Know By Experience.
This is the first book about Outward Bound in the United States.
Early-to-mid 1970s River travel, caving, urban trips and other activities are integrated.
The School now offers courses nearly year-round.
1974 - 1975 Second base camp, Green Cove, opens near Franklin, NC.
The School also operates a rotating base in the Florida Everglades.
1977 - 1994 John Huie serves as Executive Director.
Huie further organizes staff training, safety procedures and programming. He emphasizes the School’s moral teachings.
1986 Cedar Rock Base Camp near Asheville, NC and Sunset Island Base Camp in Florida are purchased.
1991 Atlanta Outward Bound Center is established.
1997 - 2002 Larry Pitt serves as Executive Director.
1997 Dave Genova designs the first Unity course.
2000 Chile and the Bahamas are added as course locations.
2003-2005 Henry Browning servers as Executive Director.
2005-2007 John Webster serves as Executive Director.
2007 Whitney Montgomery starts as Executive Director.
